A Pox Upon Humanity: AI Writing
So, I've been doing some research on various publishing methods and options and now I'm getting all these horrid targeted ads about using AI to write an entire ebook without actually writing anything! It makes me so mad! They try to make it sound like this amazing thing with lines like "I have no creativity, but look at this book I wrote with AI." And I'm like, "You did crap, dude. Also, I'm 99.999999% sure you are AI, so shut your artificial mouth and leave the creative endeavors to the humans who are actually capable of producing original thoughts instead of just regurgitating whatever inputs they've been given!"
Publishing quality has already gone downhill with publishers being less thorough while pushing for incessant book releases. We do not need to worsen the situation by adding shoddy AI catastrophes to the mix! Poorly written and edited books drive away readers. Authors already have to compete with each other and other forms of entertainment, we shouldn't add computers to the mix! But of course there are already "writers" using AI to do the work. It's aggravating.
I realize that the "writers" using AI to do the actual creating are probably only in it for the money and/or attention. And to be fair, both of those things are quite enjoyable, even necessary in the case of the money. I mean, yes, I do intend to publish my work in the hopefully not too distant future, and it would be validating and satisfying to make some money from that, but that's not why I write. I write because these stories and characters come to me and I want to do them justice. I want to convey how real they seem and how deeply they make me feel, to other people.
That said, why do people feel the need to force themselves into creative endeavors that they have neither passion nor skill for? (To be fair, passion and skill can and should be cultivated. A lot of people just don't bother to do so on either front.) It's okay to not be a creative type. It's okay to not have some grand driving ambition. Why can't people just let themselves be? We all have different talents, capacities, and interests. No one can be everything and it's extremely unhealthy to try. Also, wordsmithing is such a multi-layered art form. It's probably one of the worst ones to be "casually professional" in, but probably also the easiest to fake as it relies on more than just blatant visual consumption. All that to say, it's just a bit mind-boggling to me that people can be so blasé about a creative medium that I find so consuming.
Also, on a different tangent: creative AI is oxymoronic! AI is only as "creative" as what is fed into it. It literally consumes original, human created work and than rips it off to produce something "original". (Let's not get into how unethical that actually is.) Honestly, it reminds me of how Satan is incapable of creation. He can only twist that which God already created. So, I guess that means "creative AI" is the Devil or at least, of the Devil. Makes sense to me!
